What does your STA membership provide you?

  • Two lobbyist firms working on behalf of STA to protect the towing industry and pass legislation favorable to the industry. Current bills on the docket:
  1. A bill to require all tow companies providing voluntary or involuntary tow services to register with the DPU and meet minimum insurance and background standards.
  2. A bill to require the DPU to meet a specific timeline for tow rate increase petitions. PASSED
  3. A bill to align regulation to treat all involuntary motor vehicle recoveries in a manner to similar to commercial motor vehicle recoveries.
  • The STA Scholarship Fund awards two $1,000 scholarships to STA Member & Employee children who are graduating High School Seniors continuing their education either at college or trade school or currently enrolled college students.
  • STA Law and Liens book available for member purchase
  • Discounts on Statewide Towing Academy training and certification classes and discounts through the TowPartners program, Unifirst and AW Direct. Training courses offered include: Light Duty, Heavy Duty, HazWopper, Hoisting License, re-certification & continuing education.
  • Discounts on DOT compliance, CDL training, driver recruiting services and more through New England Tractor Trailer School (NETTS).
  • An online auction site where STA Members can sell abandon cars. Auctions are marketed to Auto Recyclers of America and Mass. Auto Recyclers of America. STA Members pay no membership fee, a low $35/vehicle listing fee which is offset by a $45 Buyers fee paid directly to the Seller and no charges for a re-listing.
  • In 2016, STA partnered with Auto Impound Solutions to provide discounted Lien Processing Services to STA members.
  • FREE Training sessions throughout the year. Last year STA obtained TIMS (Traffic Incident Management) training for members and in the past has offered workshops on Wage & Hour Laws, Diversification, Policies and Procedures, Lien Processing and how to run an online auction to maximize revenues.
  • NEW for 2016 a searchable member database for members and consumers at NeedATow.org
  • The STA Board actively advocates for the industry cultivating political relationships. In 2017, STA representatives met with various state leaders to advocate for the towing industry.
  • STA Board members representing STA are also sitting members of state cooperative committees for example the MassDOT TIMS (Traffic Incident Management) Task Force and the I95 Corridor Coalition where STA advocates for the towing industry and educates the public safety community about the challenges towers face.
  • In 2016, STA founded the Academy Charitable Fund through Statewide Towing Academy to assist children and families in need.
  • The e-Newsletter gives you timely information for example: The latest STA news, FMCSA USDOT 24 sweep notice, New OSHA reporting requirements for 2015, UCR Renewal Reminder Notice, the Statewide Towing Academy Training Schedule, Membership Meeting Notices, and much more.
  • A handy Fuel Surcharge chart that is updated monthly and emailed to members. Charts are great to give to drivers to ensure correct calculations.
  • Every 5 years, STA holds an Anniversary weekend event with free training, demo’s, vendors, a gala, beauty contest and more. The 45th Anniversary Event was held Oct. 3, 2015 at Devens.
  • Each year the STA holds a charity golf event to benefit the STA Scholarship Fund and a charity chosen by STA. This year the proceeds will benefit the Statewide Towing Academy Charitable Fund.
  • STA offers CORI screening based on Standards of Review which meets the Massachusetts State Police requirement for tow operators.
  • STA established and manages the Towing Traffic Incident Reporting System (TTIRS) which acts as a national database for tow operator involved incidents.
  • STA has a Crisis Management Team available to assist members in a variety of crisis situations. The Crisis Management Team reaches out to families with offers of assistance. Based on the families’ wishes, the CMT coordinates tow truck processions for fallen towers, establishes protocol for processions and events, and acts as liaison with media outlets.
  • NEW in 2017, the STA Office can run MA RMV records and obtain vehicle owner information involuntary tows.
  • The STA Office is available M-F, 8AM-5PM to assist members or answer questions. If you have a question, concern or suggestion, please do not hesitate to call.
